father, ed carolan, was developing dementia. he was transferred to brookdale vista on east prater way in sparks. at the same time she was facing her own battle with cancer. then came a call from a storage facility where her father rented a unit. his account had been refused. strange, because only she had access to his account. tara: "i called bank of america and i found out between november 2014 and september 2015, more than $13 thousand dollars had been taken from his account." while she was dealing with her own medical emergency, someone had been stealing from her father. tara: "it was for things like mary kay, a jewelry company, a house cleaning things while he was on assisted living. it was purchases i didn't authorize and he didn't have access to his account." the investigation soon centered on 43 year old alma martin, a housekeeper at brookdale. tara: "what i believe happened is she saw his bank statement and his debit card out in his room. she had access to it when he wasn't around." martin has been booked on five counts, charges including grand larceny and unauthorized use of a debit card."> brookdale issued a statement late today saying it was cooperating with investigators adding, "we are disappointed to late today saying it was

"having the citizens, they almost become an adjunct to the police, we are all fighting crime together. you know we are all in this city together, you have lots of eyes and ears." "it makes it a lot easier for them as well just to have that contact with their police department. i mean it is 24/7 now that you can use this application." the app cost 35- thousand dollars for the department to build from the ground up... it is free for you to use.

they were able to pull themselves out and get back up onto the land." police say the man was treated near the lake, and was not taken to the hospital. the reno fire department's ice rescue team-- had to cut the ice away, for the rescue. the dog... a pit bull... unfortunately drowned. officers say the changing temperatures and the number of geese on the lake, have weakened the ice. trt:15 david blondfield, ice rescue, rfd, "this ice here actually has a lot of goose excrement on it and that itself actually breaks the ice up. you probably have some video of me falling through just my own weight was breaking the ice. so it is never considered safe in this area." the ice rescue team says a person who falls through the ice-- has about a minute to control their breathing, or they'll go under. they also have about ten minutes of useful movement in their hands and fingers-- to get out. ### an overturned big-rig caused serious delays on interstate 80 this afternoon. it was around one

truck overturned in the westbound lanes near the spaghetti bowl. the truck was carrying a trailer full of cars. a few of the cars also rolled off onto the highway... blocking several lanes. officials say nevada prisons are adding more guards, and they're training officers how to use rubber bullets. it's an effort to end deadly shootings, behind bars. but during a meeting today... officials said shotguns, are still needed as well. the meeting comes as nevada faces lawsuits over prison shootings... including one at high desert state prison in 2014-- that left an inmate dead. it was recommended that the state, reduce the use of bird-shot. officials say the new tools will reduce the need for lethal force, but it remains a valuable-- and potentially life-saving last resort. ### if you want to cast your vote for a new second amendment nevada license plate... you have until sunday. the nevada firearms coalition has created four designs... each with the slogan "protect the second amendment."

nevada is being awarded five-point-six-million- dollars from state officials to hire more than 160 social workers and mental health professionals for nevada schools. eleven districts, and six charter schools will receive the funding, as part of a broad anti- bullying initiative. students were recently surveyed-- on the health of their school climate. funding was awarded-- based in part, on which schools needed the most intervention. the anti-bullying office says, investing in the social and emotional

pay big dividends in their academic performance. lawmakers voted last spring-- approving major anti-bullying initiatives, proposed by governor brian sandoval. ### nevada continues to be an important primary state in the race for the white house. republican hopeful carly fiorina will be in reno sunday, january 17th, for a town hall meeting. the former c-e-o of hewlett-packard will be at lakeridge golf course from three to four that afternoon. this will be her second trip to northern nevada as part of her campaign. you're never too old to color... in fact, adult coloring books are popping up in books stores everywhere. although they've been around for years... the books have recently started to rise in popularity. but they're much different than the coloring books you might have grown up with. many of them are filled with detailed designs and intricate patterns. book stores say they have trouble keeping them stocked. therapists claim they can have a positive impact on your mental health. "you're watching kolo 8 sports now with josh little." it's been quite a season for brandon marshall... and the former pack linebacker has earned yet another honor marshall has earned the ed block courage award... it honors the broncos player that shows sportsmanship and courage in the return from an injury... marshall had lisfranc surgery during the offseason, and came back to record over 100 tackels for the second year in a row... he's also an alternate to the pro bowl... marshall also won the

by the local media... he is a candidate for the national award... marshall and the broncos host the steelers on sunday in the afc divisional playoffs. big news out of the nfl today. the 49ers have hired chip kelly as their new head coach kelly was fired by the eagles with one game to go this season.... he won 26 games during his three years in philly, including a pair of 10-win seasons... he's known for his offense, which was successful in the college ranks at oregon... he coached the ducks for four seasons, averaging 11 wins a year, and going to four straight bcs bowl games... this could mean that colin kaepernick will be back with the 49ers... kelly has liked kap since his days at nevada, and tried to trade for him last season. the eagles have found kelly's successor... doug pederson will be philly's next head coach... he is the current offensive coordinator in kansas city... he used to be the eagles quarterback, and was an assistant there under former coach andy reid.. the hire will not become official until the chiefs

the best receiver in the mountain west, and one of the best on the west coast, is headed to the nfl rashad higgins will forgo his senior year to enter the nfl draft.... he was an all-american at colorado state in 2014... he's the school's all- time leader in catches, receiving yards and touchdown catches... he's expecfted to be a third-round pick in this year's draft. a great story out of minnesota... blair walsh missed the game-winning field goal last weekend, and it eliminated the vikings from the playoffs... he was a hated man in town... but a local first grade class wrote him encouraging letters, telling him to stay positive... so he made a trip to the classroom today to meet with the kids... thanks, josh.
